La Jolla Luxury Wedding Photographer

Ocean cliffs, soft coastal light, and some of the most elegant venues in Southern California. La Jolla weddings deserve images that feel as timeless as the setting.

We're American Portra, a husband-and-wife team with 13 years behind the camera. Nick leads photography, Rosie leads planning, and our lead videographer captures your film. One team, every detail covered.

Photo, Film and Planning in One Team

We photograph, film and plan weddings across La Jolla, including large multi-day Indian and South Asian celebrations. Couples get sneak peeks within one to two weeks, so you can relive the day almost right away.

Cameron and Roxanna

Wedding at La Valencia Hotel

“My husband and I were absolutely blown away by Nick's work on our wedding day and we could not be happier with our choice of photographer! He was able to capture every moment of our day and more. Looking through all the photos made us feel like we were reliving our special day all over again. He was incredibly professional from the moment we contacted him and very responsive. He also takes into account your personal vision and ideas when shooting which makes the photos feel much more personal.

Honestly, we have nothing but positive feedback for his work - just save yourself the scroll through these reviews and hire him! 10/10 recommend.”

“Nick's eye, color palette, and editing skills were what drew us to him initially. Once we started to work with him, what stuck with us was his professionalism and his responsiveness. He put us at ease knowing that we didn't have to worry about our photos turning out well.

On the day of our wedding, he was adaptable but also kept us to a timeline. We got all the photos we wanted and they all looked so good. Thank you so much Nick!”

La Jolla Wedding FAQ

When is the best time for photos in La Jolla?

The hour before sunset gives the softest light on the cliffs and water. We plan your timeline around it.

Do I need a permit for a beach or park wedding in La Jolla?

Yes. Ceremonies at public spots like the Cuvier Wedding Bowl need a City of San Diego permit, even small elopements. We'll point you to the right office early so you can lock in your date.

How much does a La Jolla wedding cost?

It varies widely by venue, guest count and season. Venue fees alone often range from about $5,000 to $30,000. Our planning team can help you build a realistic budget.

Can we have our reception at the beach or park too?

Usually not. Public spots like the Wedding Bowl allow ceremonies only, so most couples pair them with a nearby reception venue like La Valencia or the La Jolla Woman's Club.

Which La Jolla beaches allow larger weddings?

Most public beach spots cap guest counts at around 50. La Jolla Shores and Calumet Park allow more, so they're worth a look for bigger celebrations.

How far ahead should we book the Cuvier Wedding Bowl?

Only one wedding permit is issued per day, so popular dates go fast. Secure your date first, then book vendors around it.

What's the best time of year for a La Jolla wedding?

Spring and fall bring the clearest skies. Early summer mornings can be gray with "June gloom," but it usually burns off by sunset, just in time for golden hour.

Do you offer video and planning too?

Yes. Photography, film and planning are each led by their own specialist, so you can book one or all three.
